Mission & Goals
AIDOS is an Italian NGO founded in 1981 that works globally to promote the rights, dignity, and freedom of choice of women and girls. Its mission is rooted in a gender transformative approach to sustainable development. AIDOS focuses on the following areas: the eradication of gender-based violence and the promotion of women’s rights, as an integral and necessary part of the development process; sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR); the economic empowerment of women; access to education for women and girls. AIDOS has a special consultative status the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations (ECOSOC) and is implementing partner of the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). AIDOS teams up with partner organizations in different countries to jointly build projects and develop shared strategies to address the specific needs of women and girls. All of AIDOS activities aim at creating structural conditions that nurture sustainable development.
EU Legislative Interests
AIDOS monitors closely every EU legislative proposal and policy relating to gender equality, sexual and reproductive health and rights, and international cooperation. For instance AIDOS, in partnership with the European networks it is part of, monitored the legislative process regarding the Directive on Combating Violence Against Women and Domestic Violence (Directive (EU) 2024/1385), and initiatives such as the report on the situation of sexual and reproductive health and rights in the EU, in the frame of women’s health, the so called Matic Report (2020/2215). AIDOS participates in the formulation of policy recommendations for the implementation of instruments such as The EU Gender Equality Action Plan III (GAP III), to promote gender equality and women's empowerment in EU external action, and monitors closely processes such as the definition of each Multi Financial Framework. AIDOS coordinates the Italian APPG (All Party Parliamentary Group) that is part of EPF, the European Parliamentary Forum, a network of Members of Parliament throughout Europe who are committed to protecting the sexual and reproductive rights (SRHR) of all people, both in Europe and overseas. Moreover, AIDOS also regularly takes part in consultations, such as the recent ones on Gender Equality and LGBTQI+ strategies.
Communication Activities
AIDOS engages in EU level campaigns such as the “A World Where” campaign, coordinated by Countdown 2030 Europe and aimed at driving Europe’s global commitments on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), including family planning (FP), to meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) targets, advance gender equality and strengthen health systems. The campaign included national events held by the member association of the consortium and EU level initiatives such as the pop-up musEUm, held in November 2024, an exhibition dedicated to fostering a deeper understanding of sexual and reproductive freedom worldwide and bringing together Members of the European Parliament, civil society and human rights defenders to exchange ideas on how the EU can strengthen its commitment to sexual and reproductive freedom in this new mandate.
