Mission & Goals
The Association of State Drinking Water Administrators (ASDWA), whose 57 members include the 50 state drinking water programs, five territorial programs, the Navajo Nation, and the District of Columbia. ASDWA’s members work on the front lines every day to protect public health and ensure safe drinking water through the implementation of the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA). ASDWA provides a voice for state drinking water programs in the federal rulemaking process. Its intent is to not only improve public health and the environment but also ensure that drinking water regulations are implementable at the state-level.
EU Legislative Interests
While ASDWA cannot lobby, it can provide insight and education surrounding the drinking water quality challenges in the United States. Disinfection byproducts (DBPs) are a major contaminant of concern in the US, with a revision to the current regulation underway. ASDWA seeks information on how European nations are addressing DBPs both from a regulatory and technological standpoint. ASDWA hopes that working together globally, we can reduce exposure to DBPs around the world. ASDWA has been working with the H2OforAll EU Taskforce to present the US regulatory outlook for DBPs as well as sharing DBP compliance issues, with the goal of understanding the EU approach to addressing the contaminant.
Communication Activities
ASDWA's EU communication activities have been limited to its participation in the H2OforAll Taskforce. Within the US, ASDWA provides Congressional testimony and comments on US regulations.
