Mission & Goals

ALTE is an association of language test providers who work together to promote the fair and accurate assessment of linguistic ability across Europe and beyond. ALTE organises courses and conferences on aspects of language assessment, and operates a quality auditing system of European language examinations. ALTE is anon-profit organisation, it has Participatory Status as an NGO with the Council of Europe and Special Consultative Status with the ECOSOC of the UN. ALTE established a set of common standards which cover all the stages of the language testing process. These standards can be applied to exams of any language, and ensure the quality of ALTE Members' examinations. ALTE supports the learning, teaching and assessment of a wide range of languages, and promotes the recognition of qualifications in these languages across Europe. Communication Activities

ALTE contributes to EU priorities on language learning and educational modernisation through a wide range of communication activities, events and publications that connect research, policy and practice. As a long standing collaborator of the European Commission, ALTE helped deliver the European Survey on Language Competences, assessing 15 year olds’ foreign language abilities across Europe, and has engaged MEPs through European Day of Languages events at the European Parliament, where it has presented briefings on language learning and assessment. Its work on setting common standards, supporting multilingualism, and promoting recognition of language qualifications directly aligns with EU goals for automatic mutual recognition of diplomas and the modernisation of education. ALTE’s initiatives on digital language testing, AI in assessment, and language equality—supported through conferences, training, and quality assurance publications—further contribute to strengthening language learning in the EU and ensuring equitable access to linguistic resources in the digital age.
