Mission & Goals
The Association of European Cancer Leagues (ECL) is a non-profit, European umbrella organisation of 34 national and regional cancer societies in 28 WHO Europe countries. ECL provides an exclusive platform for members to collaborate with their international peers, primarily in the areas of cancer prevention, tobacco control, cancer research, access to medicines and patient support, and creates opportunities to advocate for these issues at the EU and national level. ECL represents cancer leagues in the context of EU policy and advocates for members’ mutual priorities. ECL further provides administrative and technical support while offering a platform for an exchange of experiences and best practices between ECL member societies. ECL members work together primarily in the fields of cancer prevention (e.g., healthy lifestyles, skin protection and vaccinations HBV, HPV), tobacco control, access to medicines, quality of cancer care and support for cancer patients and survivors.
EU Legislative Interests
Cancer prevention and control, tobacco control (including the Tobacco Products Directive and Tobacco Taxation Directive), sunbeds, access to treatment and care, patient support, non-communicable diseases (NCD), European Code Against Cancer (ECAC). All files and initiatives related to Europe's Beating Cancer Plan, Horizon Europe's Cancer Mission Board and the Pharmaceutical Strategy for Europe, Health Technology Assessments, clinical trials, EU Health Data Space, and the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Communication Activities
We coordinate the flagship campaign European Week Against Cancer (EWAC) every year from 25-31 May. We are responsible for the organisation of the triennial tobacco control policy conference European Conference on Tobacco or Health (ECToH). We work with our 34 national and regional cancer leagues to provide position statements and respond to health and cancer-related public consultations. As the official Secretariat for the MEPs Against Cancer (MAC) Interest Group at the European Parliament, we are responsible for organising all MAC events upon the request of MEPs. ECL participates in work packages related to communications and dissemination in the ongoing EU-funded projects BCLEAR, CBIG-SCREEN, MyPeBS, PAINLESS, PIECES, SPARC and TRANSCEND-XR.
