Mission & Goals

MedCities is a network of Mediterranean cities and metropolitan areas created in Barcelona in November 1991 at the initiative of the Mediterranean Environmental Technical Assistance Programme (METAP). Medcities Works in urban sustainable development with the following objectives: 1)To develop the awareness of interdependence and common responsibility as regard policies of sustainable urban development, environmental conservation and social cohesion of the Mediterranean basin. 2) To reinforce the role, competences and resources (institutional, financial and technical) of local governments in the adoption and implementation of sustainable urban development policies. 3)To develop citizens’ awareness and involvement in the sustainable development of their towns and cities. 4)To get under way and develop projects and partnership between partners and with other associations.

EU Legislative Interests

Medcities is primarily interested in EU policies as the European Neighborhood Policy, the European Cohesion Policy and other sectorial policies and actions related to urban development such as Environment, Energy, Transport and Mobility, Employment, Culture, Tourism, Youth, Equaling Opportunities, etc. As a Mediterranean organization Medcities is participating in ARLEM and works with the UfM Secretariat in urban issues.

Communication Activities

- ANERIS (2023-2026): development of Operational Marine Biology products based on next generation of scientific instrumentation, tools and methods for sensing marine-life. Cofinanced by Horizon Europe. - WEFE4MED (2022-2026): foster the adoption of a Water-Energy-Food-Ecosystems Nexus approach in the Mediterranean through a Nexus Community of Practice (NCoP). Co-financed by PRIMA (Horizon Europe). - URWAN (2024-2026): addresses the critical link between urban regeneration and resources, exploiting nature-based solutions’ role in integrating water management and climate change adaptation. Co-financed by the Interreg Euro-MED programme - D4LA (2023-2029): governance project of Euro-MED, institutional dialogue project for the Natural Heritage mission focusing on protecting, restoring and valorising the natural resources of the Euro-Mediterranean area. Co-financed by the Interreg Euro-MED programme - C4LA (2023-2029): governance project of Euro-MED, thematic community project for the Green Living Area mission focusing on improve the lives of Mediterranean citizens by promoting the development of green living areas. Co-financed by the Interreg Euro-MED programme - ‎ProcuraMED (2024-2026): support the transition towards competitive, innovative, sustainable and resilient ecosystems in the Mediterranean developing innovation capacities of enterprises and local authorities and the uptake of advanced green technologies of Strategic Procurement Procedures. Co-financed by the Interreg Euro-MED programme - Gov4GreenMed (2025-2027): design territorial participatory methodologies to make Inclusive Governance Models possible, implementing them in five pilot actions in municipalities of Spain, Italy, Türkiye, Jordan and Tunisia, for a Greener Transition in the Mediterranean. Co-financed by the Interreg NEXTMED programme - MERSIN (2023-2025): prepare a Climate Change Adaptation Action Plan to improve adaptation to climate change in Mersin, to strengthen local actors' and decision makers' capacity on climate actions. Co-financed by the Climate Change Adaptation Grant Programme -BLUEMISSIONMED (2023-2025): Inspire, inform, assess, mobilise, connect and empower all the actors that can take a role in preventing and eliminating pollution in the Mediterranean sea and wàters - MAIS (2022-2026): Active and intelligent mobility in Sfax (Tunisia) and it will do so through innovative actions that will be based on giving support to the Municipality of Sfax in the preparation, implementation and monitoring of all project activities as well as the financial management. - ValEUr-Gabes (2020-2025): Valuation of urbain water through innovative actions and instruments - ASIMA Tunis (2020-2025): Strategic plan of Tunis
