Mission & Goals
The Asian Forum for Human Rights and Development (FORUM-ASIA) works to promote and protect human rights, including the right to development, through collaboration and cooperation among human rights organisations and defenders in Asia and beyond. FORUM-ASIA is a network of 85 member organisations in 23 countries, mainly in Asia. It was founded in 1991 in Manila, the Philippines. Its Secretariat is established in Bangkok, Geneva, Jakarta, and Kathmandu. FORUM-ASIA envisions societies in Asia and beyond which are democratic, just, equitable and sustainable, where all human rights of all individuals, groups, and peoples are fully realised, in accordance with international human rights standards and norms. Guided by this vision, FORUM-ASIA’s mission is to strengthen movements for human rights and sustainable development through advocacy, capacity-development and solidarity actions with human rights defenders (HRDs) and civil society organisations (CSOs).
EU Legislative Interests
As our Organisation is not based in Europe (apart from our branch office in Geneva), FORUM-ASIA does not follow legislative files or policies of the EU per se. However, we do engage on EU Guidelines on Human Rights Defenders in Asian countries (see below for more details). We were also a beneficiary of the Civil Society and Local Authorities Strengthening Regional, European and Global CSO Umbrella Organisations (Framework Partnership) Grant and as such, follow the related policies of this Agreement.
Communication Activities
FORUM-ASIA's Human Rights Defenders (HRD) Programme has been engaging with the EU delegation in Asia (e.g. Pakistan, Thailand, Mongolia, Cambodia, Myanmar, Indonesia and Nepal) and encouraging them to have effective and efficient implementation of the EU Guidelines on Human Rights Defenders in Asian countries. The guidelines set out the EU’s role and aspirations for cooperation with human rights defenders, and propose practical means of assisting at-risk activists. The Programme has shared feedback on the implementation of the guidelines and how it can be improved further. The HRD Programme also engaged with DEVCO through Protect defenders.eu consortium (e.g. regular meeting with PD.eu members/annual beneficiary meetings in Brussels). Our UN Advocacy Programme works with the EU Delegation in Geneva regarding several key resolutions and issues FORUM-ASIA has been working on apart from our thematic priorities (e.g. Myanmar: FFM, Rohingya/ Sr Lanka: CoI, accountability/ Philippines: EJK etc).
