Mission & Goals

The Appeals Centre’s vision and mission are to contribute to an online environment that protects freedom of expression and human rights, through independently and impartially resolving disputes raised by people and communities in the European Union about the application of content standards by online social media platforms. We aim to do this in a scalable, timely and cost-effective manner. The Appeals Centre operates as an independent and mission-driven not-for-profit organisation, with no corporate nor shareholder ownership

EU Legislative Interests

The Appeals Centre will primarily follow the implementation of the Digital Services Act and initiatives touching upon online platforms. This may include the European Media Freedom Act, the Code of Practice on Disinformation, the Digital Fairness Act, and initiatives regarding access to justice, the protection of fundamental rights, the promotion of democratic values, to keep young people safe online and to fight discrimination, hate speech and cyberbullying.

Communication Activities

The Appeals Centre will engage through meetings with policymakers, attend meetings, hearings and stakeholder meetings as required. It will convene policymakers and stakeholder in roundtables and events and likewise send representatives to such events. It will monitor legislative and non-legislative developments in areas of relevance and it will seek to educate policymakers, stakeholders and the public of its work, mission and vision, as well as expertise in certain areas pertaining to its work.
