Mission & Goals

Our organization is dedicated to raising awareness about the treatment of animals, with the ultimate goal of reducing their suffering, particularly within the context of animal agriculture. Through advocacy and proactive engagement, we aim to influence policies and practices that prioritize animal welfare and foster a more compassionate, sustainable future. We are also committed to promoting a considerable increase of plant-based food production and consumption, advocating for legislative and broader societal change that encourages ethical and sustainable choices. Our vision is a future where environmental sustainability, respect for animals and the well-being of people and the planet are prioritized.

EU Legislative Interests

EU food & farming policies Common Agricultural Policy Animal Transport proposal Revision of Public Procurement Directives Public Procurement INI Report Livestock Strategy Upcoming proposals on animal welfare with a particular focus on phasing out cages in animal farming Improving fish welfare Transitioning towards more plant-based foods & alternatives to animal products Incentives for plant-based production & consumption Biodiversity Strategy Enforcement of acquis on animal welfare Other legislative proposals impacting farm animal welfare Sustainable food systems Labelling policies in regards to animal welfare Environmental protection Our activities focus on a range of policy areas related to animal welfare, agriculture, food systems, the environment, trade & health. Our advocacy and public affairs work spans several European Parliament standing committees, including AGRI, ENVI, SANT, TRAN, INTA, and IMCO, & equivalent Directorates-General (DGs) in the Commission. Regarding specific legislative and policy files, our influence activities center on the following: We engage with institutional & civil society stakeholders on the revision of the EU animal transport legislation, following the work of the ANIT Committee and the Commission’s commitment to realign EU law with the latest scientific evidence on animal transport. https://oeil.europarl.europa.eu/oeil/en/procedure-file?reference=2023/0448(COD)#gateway We engage on the upcoming Multi-annual Financial Framework and its impact on animal welfare and on food systems within the EU. This includes debates on the future of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP), notably the own-initiative (INI) report on the future of agriculture & the post-2027 CAP. https://oeil.europarl.europa.eu/oeil/en/procedure-file?reference=2025/2052(INI) We contribute to discussions on the future of the livestock sector, including the forthcoming Strategy on Sustainable Livestock. Our engagement also covers the European Parliament Own-Initiative Report on a sustainable future for the EU livestock sector, & the legislative file on strengthening the position of farmers in the food supply chain. https://oeil.europarl.europa.eu/oeil/en/procedure-file?reference=2025/2053(INI) https://oeil.europarl.europa.eu/oeil/en/procedure-file?reference=2024/0319(COD) We are engaging on EU guidelines for public procurement, which represent a powerful lever for food systems transition, & more globally on texts dealing with dietary guidelines. In this context, the forthcoming revision of EU public procurement legislation is of particular importance to our work. We therefore engaged with the own-initiative report on public procurement. https://oeil.europarl.europa.eu/oeil/en/procedure-file?reference=2024/2103(INI) We also work to promote the development and uptake of healthy, affordable, and accessible plant-based foods across the EU, as part of a broader European strategy for plant-based food systems. This includes engagement on policies supporting dietary diversification, protein transition, and sustainable food consumption. In this context, we closely follow and contribute to discussions on the forthcoming European Protein Diversification Strategy and related initiatives aimed at strengthening resilient, sustainable & competitive agri-food systems. We finally advocate for the long-awaited animal welfare legislation revision, following up on the “End the Cage Age” European Citizens’ Initiative & the Commission’s commitment to update outdated and not-fit-for-purpose EU laws. This includes, among other measures, the expected ban on cages for laying hens, the ban on the culling of day-old chicks, & the introduction of equivalent animal welfare requirements for imported products. Finally, we work to ensure that scientific knowledge, particularly opinions issued by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), is better integrated into EU policymaking, in order to to promote science-based, transparent, & evidence driven decision making
