Mission & Goals

The mission of AAAS is to advance science, engineering, and innovation throughout the world for the benefit of all. To accomplish that mission, AAAS is guided by the following four strategic goals. First, to advance scientific excellence and achievement. AAAS recognizes, inspires, and enables a robust research ecosystem that drives discovery and innovation and prepares future scientists and engineers. Second, to foster inclusivity for scientific excellence. AAAS fosters the open and inclusive scientific enterprise that is essential for scientific excellence. Third, to build trust among scientists and communities. AAAS builds trust among scientists and engineers and broader communities and is a valued source of accurate scientific information that is foundational to countering misinformation. Fourth, to catalyze progress where science meets policy. AAAS provides actionable evidence for public policy that serves society and promotes policies that enable quality science.

EU Legislative Interests

AAAS is a multi-disciplinary general scientific society with members around the globe. The main EU legislative proposals or polices that we are focused on concern the scientific ecosystem, including research funding, open access, workforce development, innovation and competitiveness policies. Specific legislative examples include the following. The upcoming regulation (likely released in July 2025) that would establish the 10th Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (FP10) Regulation (EU) 2021/695 of the European Parliament that established Horizon Europe – the Framework Programme for Research and Innovation. Regulation (EU) 2016/679 of the European Parliament on the protection of natural persons with regard to the processing of personal data and on the free movement of such data.
