Mission & Goals
Austria’s leading packaging compliance scheme, Altstoff Recycling Austria AG (ARA), offers a full compliance service to all businesses that are subject to the Austrian Packaging Ordinance. We have organised and financed the collection, sorting and recovery of packaging waste throughout Austria since 1993. With a total of more than 740,000 tonnes of packaging waste collected in 2024, we play an important role in providing Austrian businesses with raw materials. Our collection and recovery services help save more than 500,000 tonnes in carbon equivalents. As a Producer Responsibility Organization, ARA operates on a non-profit basis and is owned by leading Austrian companies. The packaging recovery and recycling service is financed by our around 15,000 business customers. We use the revenues from compliance fees to organise and finance the collection and recovery of packaging in Austria. ARA is a key player in supporting the EU initiative for a transition towards a circular economy.
