Mission & Goals

ALT-TEXT champions digital sovereignty, AI literacy, and free access to information as fundamental rights. Everyone—regardless of status, identity, or ability—should connect, create, learn, and participate online without exploitation. We promote ethical, human‑centric technologies that respect privacy, pay workers fairly, minimize environmental impact, and avoid manipulative dark patterns. We reject walled gardens, harmful algorithms, surveillance capitalism, and extractive business models, instead supporting open‑source protocols, transparent governance, and community‑maintained tools. Through advocacy, training, and research, we strengthen media literacy—including digital, data, statistical, AI, and visual literacy—empowering citizens to critically engage with media and technology. Our mission is to build awareness and promote ethical media; our vision is a sovereign digital world free from harmful big tech practices, where people access information and express themselves freely.

Communication Activities

ALT-TEXT undertakes communication activities that align with EU priorities on digital rights, media literacy, and ethical technology. We organise public events, workshops, and training sessions on digital sovereignty, AI literacy, and media literacy, empowering citizens to critically engage with information and technology. Our campaigns raise awareness of harmful practices such as surveillance capitalism, disinformation, and exploitative algorithms, while promoting open-source, community‑maintained tools that respect privacy and human rights. We publish research, advocacy papers, and transparency reports to support EU goals on freedom of expression, equal access, and democratic participation. Through collaborations with like‑minded organisations, we contribute to EU debates on digital governance, platform accountability, and media pluralism, ensuring citizens are informed, resilient, and able to participate fully in the digital public sphere.
