Mission & Goals
The AI Standards Lab is an independent non profit, with a charitable purpose of "developing artificial intelligence standards and risk management frameworks". Our mission is to help accelerate the writing of AI safety standards, for example standards and codes or practice in support of the EU AI Act. Our broader goal is to contribute to the safe and responsible development of AI technologies globally.
EU Legislative Interests
We are mainly targeting the EU AI Act and the Digital Omnibus legislation to update the AI Act, specifically through contributing, and intending contribute to: 1. CEN-CENELEC JTC21 standards in support of the EU AI Act. 2. The drafting of AI Act related Codes of Practice as organised by the Commission/EU AI Office. 3. AI Act related consultations (e.g. on the drafting of Guidelines) as organised by the Commission/EU AI Office.
Communication Activities
Our team members have given public presentations on the nature of the EU AI Act and how best to support it (via e.g. participating in standardization). We are publishing analysis and opinions related to the AI Act which are mainly targeted as subject matter specialists, but which are available for all to read on our website.

Some of the AI Standards Lab team members are part of CEN-CENELEC JTC21 via their respective national standards bodies. The AI Standards Lab collaborates closely with Holtman Systems Research. This includes having done joint requests for charity funding. When the AI Standards Lab was starting up, Holtman Systems Research sponsored AI Standards Lab by providing free labor.
Organisation Members
The Lab operates under a fiscal sponsorship agreement with Players Philanthropy Fund Inc., a Texas nonprofit corporation recognized by IRS as a tax-exempt public charity under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (Federal Tax ID: 27-6601178, ppf.org/pp). The AI Standards Lab collaborates with Holtman Systems Research ( https://holtmansystemsresearch.nl/ )

More specifically, the charities have provided funding for the operation of the AI Standards Lab, operation to pursue the charitable purpose as defined in advance by the Lab and according to an operating plan as defined in advance by the Lab In the currently open financial year 05/2025 - 04/2026 we so far received a grant of 194,872 EUR from the Survival and Flourishing Fund.
