Mission & Goals

Founded in 2016, Sinopsis is a Prague-based think tank focusing on China and its impact in the Czech Republic, Central and Eastern Europe (CEE), and the world. It organizes its activities around rigorous research, systematic public outreach, and targeted policy intervention. In its research activities, Sinopsis collaborates closely with the Department of Sinology at the Faculty of Arts, at Charles University, where it recently received the Miroslav Petrusek Award for Excellence in Public Outreach. All Sinopsis researchers are trained sinologists working with original sources in Chinese and other languages. Internationally, we work with a network of experts from Switzerland to New Zealand on analytical pieces, including scoops and revelations that have led to policy responses. In public outreach, Sinopsis works closely with mainstream media in the Czech Republic to channel the results of academic research into the public discourse where it informs and sustains policy formulation.

Communication Activities

In June 2023 Sinopsis met with Vice-President of the European Commission for Values and Transparency Věra Jourová to discuss the social and technological aspects of dissemination of disinformation. In January 2021 the Sinopsis director and media coordinator gave a presentation in the European Parliament at the Committee on Foreign Interference in all Democratic Processes in the European Union, including Disinformation. The presentation included topics of Sinopsis’ previous and ongoing research, notably the “Repurposing Democracy” paper written in 2019 featuring the ‘Friendship group’ in the European Parliament itself. It emerged during the hearing that the Friendship Group had been suspended in November 2020, as a direct result of media reports that were in turn based on that paper. Effectively Sinopsis neutralised what had been a significant CCP influence operation, in ‘partnership’ with multiple party-state agencies. Repurposing Democracy paper: https://sinopsis.cz/en/ep/ In the seven years since its inception, Sinopsis has published more than 1,400 pieces in different formats, almost all of them syndicated in mass-circulation media. Sinopsis analysts have also been regularly featured in TV and radio talk shows, podcasts, interviews, public debates and international conferences, contributing over the years to a sea change in the public discourse on China, Taiwan, related geopolitical issues and disinformation. Sinopsis has established itself as the authoritative voice on these topics not only in the Czech Republic, but on the European Union level and internationally. In policy intervention, Sinopsis has been working directly with legislators and policy-makers on specific responses to the topics documented in our research. https://sinopsis.cz/
