Regulation on the market of products containing, consisting of or produced from genetically modified MON 94804, pursuant to Regulation (EC) No 1829/2003 of the European Parliament and of the Council

This resolution expresses the European Parliament's objection to the European Commission's draft decision to allow genetically modified maize MON 94804 onto the market for food and feed.

The maize, developed by Bayer, is engineered to be shorter by reducing gibberellic acid production. The application also covers its use in products other than food and feed, excluding cultivation.

Concerns include the potential for the artificial microRNA used in the modification to have unintended effects on other plant functions and its persistence. Questions remain about the impact of reduced gibberellins on plant processes beyond height, especially under stress.

The Parliament argues the draft decision is inconsistent with EU law's aim for a high level of protection for health and the environment. It calls for the Commission to withdraw the draft and submit a new one, citing insufficient data and lack of qualified Member State support.
